What is special about homoerotic manga?

1. Two completely different worlds

What is it good for – and what problem does it reveal?

Homoerotic manga are a form of therapy for millions of men:

• They cure body dysmorphia: When a 50-year-old, 120-kg bear with a full beard is portrayed as the ultimate sex god, one's own body suddenly feels desirable too.

• They allow for closeness without fear of rejection: In manga, no one is rejected because of age, weight, or hairiness – quite the opposite.

• They offer a sexuality beyond the superficiality of Grindr: Here, it's not the perfect profile picture that counts, but character, chemistry, and raw attraction.

• They compensate for the lack of positive gay role models; ordinary men become heroes.

The real problem they uncover is that Western gay mainstream culture is still extremely fixated on youth and physical appearance. Bara and Yaoi show that millions of men don't want this – and that there is a huge, unmet need for genuine diversity.
