Boundary Heat – Five summers with the boys from the cricket club

We are the "Ashes Rebels," fourteen guys between 20 and 30 who live on the old club grounds every summer. White trousers, sunshine, the clacking of ball against bat for hours. After practice, we sit for ages on the benches in front of the pavilion, drinking cold beer or ginger beer, teasing each other about our scores. Arjun, our new fast-bowler from London, fits in perfectly right away—tall, dark eyes, that mischievous grin. We're simply a team that sticks together like glue.
Mid-July, net training until dusk. Most people have already left; only Arjun and I are still putting the balls away. It's humid, and we've both taken our shirts off. He throws me a ball, I catch it—our fingers touch for a moment longer than necessary. Later, we sit on the old wooden bench, feet in the grass, sharing a bottle. Our thighs touch. Neither of us moves away. The crickets chirp, the sky turns purple. We talk about everything and nothing, but the air between us vibrates.
