Cross-country skiing challenge in the Alps – 25 km with friends

Saturday morning, 7 a.m., minus 12 degrees Celsius, clear air in the Tyrolean Alps. There are eight of us guys between 19 and 23, all ambitious cross-country skiers, and today is the club's internal competition: 25 km classic, whoever crosses the finish line first gets to brag for a year. I'm standing with the others in the large changing room of the sports center, we're putting on our racing suits, greasing our skis, checking our heart rate monitors. Everyone wants to be the fastest. The atmosphere is focused, a little nervous, with lots of friendly laughter. We pat each other on the back, wish each other good luck, and head out onto the track. Just snow, puffs of breath, and the thought of the finish line.
The locker room is cramped and warm from the space heater. Everywhere you look, there are these toned bodies: narrow waists, long legs, shoulders broadened from all the pole work. You can see the muscles beneath the tight performance shirts, the calves in their compression socks. I pull on my racing suit, feeling the fabric stretch taut across my thighs. Next to me stands Lukas, 21, blond, always with that slight grin. He bends over to tie his shoes, and the fabric stretches across his truly firm backside. I glance over briefly, longer than necessary, and notice my pulse quickening a little. Nothing serious, just that subtle thrill you get when you know that beneath all those layers are some seriously great bodies. But it remains just a glance.
