Wir sind die „Ashes Rebels“, vierzehn Kerle zwischen 20 und 30, die jeden Sommer auf dem alten Club-Gelände leben. Weiße Hosen, Sonne, das stundenlange Klacken von Ball auf Schläger. Nach dem Training sitzen wir noch ewig auf den Bänken vor dem Pavilion, trinken kaltes Bier oder Ginger Beer, ziehen uns gegenseitig mit den Scores auf. Arjun, unser neuer Fast-Bowler aus London, passt sofort rein – groß, dunkle Augen, dieses verschmitzte Grinsen. Wir sind einfach eine Mannschaft, die zusammenhält wie Pech und Schwefel.
Mitte Juli, Net-Training bis in die Dämmerung. Die meisten sind schon weg, nur Arjun und ich räumen noch die Bälle ein. Es ist schwül, wir haben beide die Shirts ausgezogen. Er wirft mir einen Ball zu, ich fange ihn – unsere Finger berühren sich einen Moment länger als nötig. Später sitzen wir auf der alten Holzbank, Füße im Gras, Flasche teilen. Unsere Oberschenkel berühren sich. Keiner rückt weg. Die Grillen zirpen, der Himmel wird violett. Wir reden über alles und nichts, aber die Luft zwischen uns vibriert.
